10. EARL MESSAM LOOKS TO TURN TRAGEDY INTOTRIUMPH, ON A COLD AND RAINY
PHILADELPHIA AFTERNOON,
APRIL 12–19, 2001 COVER STORY! THE MUSIC ISSUE, “FIRE & ICE” BY M.F.
DIBELLA: Careful how you drive, cause you don’t know who’s crossin’
or runnin’." Wisdom imparted from a man engaged in a righteous struggle.
For one who has become acquainted with hardship, the Promised Land seems
like a deserved end to a treacherous journey. On a cold and rainy
Philadelphia afternoon Earl Messam, CEO of the fledgling Philadelphia
independent rap/reggae/R&B label Wildfire Records, opened his doors to
discuss music, life and the inherent perils and pitfalls that go along
with them. Messam opened Wildfire Records And Variety in 1977 in his
native Kingston, Jamaica. Wildfire doubled as a recording studio for
aspiring dancehall reggae artists who would often frequent his store.
For the better part of 13 years Messam ran the store and cultivated his
love for music by producing, promoting artists and developing a marriage
between two distinct styles of music, R&B and hardcore dancehall reggae.
Messam’s work garnered him a distribution deal with Tuff Gong Records,
label of the late Bob Marley. After producing a slew of number one hits
in his native Jamaica and in England, Messam found his interests had
grown large enough to leave Jamaica. Looking to "mix the reggae along
with the hip-hop flavor," Messam found his way to Philadelphia in 1990,
reopening Wildfire Records in Germantown in 1991, continuing to manage,
produce and promote talent in the manner of his past endeavors.
The road to the
Promised Land took a tragic turn for Messam on Christmas Eve, 1995. At
8:15 p.m. Messam was shot 10 times in a robbery attempt around the
corner from his Germantown apartment building.
Messam’s expressive Jamaican brogue takes a turn for the severe when
talking about that night, "I was taken to the hospital, God helped me
fight picking’ up ten shots and make it. He helped me to have courage
and gave me support from these [Wildfire] artists in the struggle." At
one point that night the doctors had given up on Messam after his vital
signs were failing, but Messam fought on and was miraculously
resurrected. "It’s so sad, each time I remember what take place, if you
had a tape of it to see you would cry, it’s like a bird taking up two
little pebbles in the air and putting you back down." Today Messam is
paralyzed from the waist down, but through strength of character and
sheer determination Messam still runs Wildfire and looks for ways to
help the youth growing up in his neighborhood: "I’m planning to go
further and help people in the city, the young guys them… it’s more than
just music." Messam looks at his label as a business but also as a means
to better the lives of those in his community.
11. AUG 30, 2005 BIGG
UP, ELLIJAH AND N.T.G. LAUNCHES PHILLY’S HOUSE OF REPRES. “EP” IS
AVAILABLE AT WWW.WFRECORDS.COM:
Messam, together with his
Wildfire cohorts, has put together the Philly House Of Representatives
Project, a seven-song EP in which the artists make no bones about which
city they’re from. The EP features the various rugged flavors of six of
the artists on the label (Trooper One, Elijah, Biggup, Paperboy, Nate
The Great and the I.M.O.). Each does their thing on a track backed by
sparse beats provided by Trooper One and then team up for the posse cut,
"Go Philly." But Wildfire is more than just a rap label and Messam is
quick to point out that he is constantly seeking out "fresh new artists
and new flavors," whether it is R&B, dancehall or even gospel.
Wildfire is not short on talent and evidence came in the form of a
surprise impromptu performance during the interview from Lady Joy, a
dancehall artist Messam is currently working with. Two of the artists
appearing on the House of Representatives project were also present,
listening attentively to their inspirational mentor. The boisterous
Biggup, passionate and well versed in the business side of the music
industry and Elijah, the youngest artist on the label though one
wouldn’t know it from his professional attitude. Both artists discussed
the philosophy behind the label. The Wildfire goal is to develop
Philadelphia into a viable and self-contained production, distribution
and marketing entity. Wildfire is a close-knit unit, more like a family
than a business enterprise. When asked if he would let a major label
pick Wildfire up Messam replied, "only for distribution, don’t want to
sell out my boys, a company can pick you up then drop you down and kill
you."
Messam is a man who caught a glimpse of the other side of life and lived
to tell about it. With a powerful spirit he aims toward peace and the
greater good; he is selfless and determined to make fortune out of
tragedy. When asked where he would like to be in five years he simply
replied: "I would like to be with you," he says, "we sit down talk, talk
about some good life and what we’re going to do for the city, what we’re
going to do for the young guys coming up."
Wildfire’s
Philly House Of Representatives, Volume 1 can be found at Continuous
Motion, 2808 Germantown Ave.; Cue Records, 617 S. Fourth St.; Tower
Records, 610 South St. and other stores. For a complete list and booking
info contact Earl Messam, 215-844-3639.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4, 2001 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: Various
Artists ''Wild Fire Records Inc.
Presents Philly's House of Representatives'' (Wild Fire **1/2). This
seven-song sampler is the debut release from a Germantown hip-hop Label
owned by Jamaican Produced Earl Messam Its street-tough raps vary wildly
in quality, and Trooper 1's Chicken head '' is as run-of-the-mill as its
title implies. The disc showcases promising talent, though, from the
quick-tongued rhyme masters Elijah and Bigg Up to the bilingual
storytelling of French-speaking Master Cipher on ''Pull Up a Chair.''

HOMETOWN BOY SET A “WILD FIRE RECORDS” IN THE HOOD BY. NAPOLEON F. KINGCADE WESTSIDE NEWS CORRESPONDENT:
The six-man ''Squad'' from a local
record label. Wild Fire Records,
say Philly his to represent and show more love when singers and rappers
search for record deals outside the city. Members of Wild Fire a hip-hop
reggae and R&B independent label, do agree a great deal of our Philly
artists end up lading record deals in other cities like New York,
California and Atlanta. Wild Fire says ‘‘that's really whack!''
According to west Philly rappers Biggup and Kwe ''Trooper 1 ''Cooper
(both members of ''Wild Fire''), this part of the music industry has to
change in Philly. That’s why this six-man-rap group from west Philly and
Germantown joined forces on the record label to give Philly artists an
opportunity to blow up their music in Philly.’ what we are trying to do
is change the whole music game and get respect,'' said Elijah, one of
the star rappers in the Wild Fire camp. ‘‘We are trying to prove that
you can stay and make your music here.’ Elijah, a Temple University
student, said many Philly rappers and singers change their style once
they sing with a major record label outside the city. He said many
record labels force artists to change their style for corporate reasons,
which he feels is not a good tings for Philly.’ we don't have to sound
this way or look this way to make it in the music.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21. GERMANTOWN COURIER.5 LOCAL RAPPERS SEEKING TO
UPGRADE PHILADELPHIA’S HIP-HOP PROFILE
(RAPPERS FROM PAGE 1):Come
in to buy candy and treats for themselves before school. Little did
they know that he was the guiding force behind such reggae and dance
hall stars of the early 90's like Mad Lion, Mad Cobra and Patra? He had
a small studio in the back of his store and occasionally he'd let some
of the kids use it. Elijah was one of those kids and it's been a
friendship ever since. Tragically, Messam was shot and confined to a
wheelchair after being shot numerous times during an attempted robbery
of his store. But he never let his condition slow him down. ''It's hard
but you have to work with love and unity'' he says.’ I’m trying to build
up the city and my strength is in the love that these young man have for
what they want to promote. But I don’t see it as a cultural difference;
it's more of a difference in how you sell the product. That's why I'm
fighting for everyone to come together. We what to take hip-hop ever
forth.'' Trooper1 his become Messam's Prentice, taking over the studio
and production aspects and making beat and rhymes that fit the unique
styles of the individual rappers. He produced the first album and he
urges everyone that if you're ''looking for tracks, ask for Kwe.''The
hardest obstacle for the group has been getting their product sold in
local stores. Today, you can get copies of their album at Tower Record
Store at 15th and Walnut. But you won’t find it Hi-Tech or Sound of
Germantown, a major slip in the face, according to Bigg Up. ''Germantown
store are not selling local rappers records and mix tapes because
they've had problems in the past with other groups cosigning their
tapes, ''he says.’ The problem is that there isn't really any respect
for manufacturing in Philly. We have one of the strongest underground
markets in the world. We're trying to market and promote an artist base
and if we do that to benefits everyone'' ''It’s not an easy business,
''adds Elijah. ''You have to stay patient and focused. We're struggling
a bit now and paying our dues, but that's how you separate the weak from
the strong.''

PHILADELPHIA NEW OBSERVER, DECEMBER 13, 2000 CHRISTMAS KWANZAA GUIDE:
Philly's House of
Representatives If you thought C.
Delores Tucker was going to make it to the senate, there is no doubt
that those rugged, gritty, grimy playas from West Philly would have to
be in another legislative branch. Philly's House of Representatives have
released their banging CD under the aegis of Wild Fire Records Inc.
what? What! What. The CD features all of them: "Bigg Up", "Trooper 1”,"I.M.O.",
"Elijah", "B.F.", "N.T.G". We first heard of "I.M.O." in France just
about
The
time of the release of our Hip Hop Film, Rap ET Islam. He and his
brother were all up inside the Rap and Reggae community of Bordeaux,
Paris St Denis and running sand all along La seine This was when Helene
and Celia were working with that remarkable Hip Hop Publication, Radial.
This is even before they blow up as Les Nubians, Cause they all Nubians.
Of Show, so we been knowing I.M.O. had Skills, Everybody from Chester
Avenue to Bailey Road be knowing that. But Elijah comes out the
wilderness like he spoke to the Master. B.F. and N.T.G. just hurting
something for reel and Trooper 1 and Bigg Up will sneak you on that MIC
if you don't got skills. Given the diverse skill base and plutonic

NEWS CLIP!!
APRIL 27-MAY 3, 2001 THE
WESTSIDE WEEKLY INDUSTRY:
"added Elijah about the music business. "I can be from Philly and still
represent. We always had the strongest underground music talent in the
world. All we are Tiring to do is the people stay or come here to do
their music. We have the connections right here." Members of Wild Fire
Records made a lot of noise three weeks ago when they appeared on
WPHI-103.9 FM's new afternoon show, new Artist spotlight. Wild Fire made
no bones about what city they represented. They played a few tracks from
their seven-song compilation CD "Philly's House of Representative” and a
few 103.9 listeners were feelin' their Philly beat. It felt good to
debut on a major radio station and hear people tell you they heard you,”
said Elijah. At this time, Wild Fire is feeling really good about its
compilation album and dedicated track "Go Philly" which talks a whole
lot about the city of Philadelphia and the 'hood. Another song that's
feathered on the group's compilation CD, which this reporter considers
to be of good taste, is entitled Elijah, which features the rapping
skills of Elijah as he raps about his notorious self. The other tracks
on their CD album are rather rugged and too hardcore for the average
music listener. Despite Their hardcore rap style and overbearing street
lyrics, Wild Fire has good intentions of being one of the better rap
representatives in this city. "We don't intend to promote violence
because because violence doesn't serve its purpose in life," said
Eilijah."We do feature Street songs, but it's our intentions not to
promote violence. We rather promote our different music styles, the way
people know music to be." Wild Fire's CEO and founder, Earl Messam
Started the group's record label back in 1977 in Kingston, Jamaica,
where he operated and ran a music studio in the back of a variety store.
Messam promoted and produced many reggae artists while stringing along a
stew of number one hits in his native land of Jamaica and England.
Messam was the guidance and driving force behind such dance hall reggae
stars as Mad Lion, Mad Cobra, Bob Marley and Patra.Looking to mix reggae
with American hip-hop, Messam decided to move his music empire to
Philadelphia in the heart of Germantown, at 5550 Morris Street, where
several new members of Wild Fire were discovered coming into his store.
The road to success took a crazy turn forth worse for Messam on
Christmas Eve, 1995 when he was shot 10 times inside his new store by a
couple of vicious robbers. Elijah, who stopped by the store two hours
before the robbery shooting, said Messam was pronounced dead for 20
minutes by the paramedics, but miraculously was revived before the
ambulance got him to the hospital. Elijah calls Messam's `resurrection'
a miracle. "It’s an inspiration for everybody about his survival,” said
Elijah about the CEO's near death experience.” It humbles you to
appreciate life when you hear something like that happen,” today, Messam
is paralyzed from the waist down and is confined to a wheel chair. But
he still runs the record label. Messam's robbers were never caught.
Elijah and the rest of the Wild Fire crew said they vowed to "create a
major impact on the hip-hop world" for their hardworking CEO. Today the
Wild Fire record boys are preparing for a major performance at the
Philadelphia Music Conference and they plan to do a series of club
bookings for WPHI-103 FM. Other artists featured on the Wild Fire record
label includes: paperboy, I.M.C (I Master Ciphers), B.F. (Ben Jamin
Franklin) and N.T.G (Nate The Great). Each of the six artists
contributed to the Philly's House of Representative EP album CD.

Cobra
coiled to sting again KEVIN JACKSON, Observer write Saturday,
April 12, 2003 Deejay Mad Cobra, one of the success stories of the
dancehall in the early 1990s, is hoping to sting once again now that he
has signed a new management contract with Paul "Bankey" Giscombe's
Bankeylous Management. The 35 year-old toasters, who shot to fame in
1992 with the gold-selling single Flex, told Throb that he is also in
discussion with major labels to work on some projects. In a recent
interview with Throb, Cobra gave little information about the projects
but says they are promising enough to see him making a comeback. "I am
working out the logistics right now with the companies. There are
several offers on the table, but I cannot say anything at this time," he
said. He disclosed that his latest album, Mixed Personalities, is due to
be released soon by the Florida-based independent label GMP Records that
has a distribution pact with the Universal Music Group. Betrayal is
earmarked as the first single to be released from Mixed Personalities.
Since splitting with the Miami-based Shang organisation, Cobra's career
has declined somewhat. The Shang team, headed by Clifton "Specialist"
Dillon, produced Mad Cobra's Hard to Wet Easy to dry album for Epic
Records. Giscombe, a former jockey, was part of the Shang team, which
also had Billboard riders Shabba Ranks and Patra, on their roster during
the early 1990s. Although he has not had a hit locally in some time, Mad
Cobra has racked up several hit singles on reggae charts in the United
Kingdom and the United States in the last three years. His Press Trigger
on the Black Shadow label's Buzz rhythm raced up the Miami and UK Reggae
charts last summer. His latest overseas hit is Haunted, another Black
Shadow production.
Originally from
the Barbican area of St Andrew, Cobra relocated to Islington, St Mary as
a youth. The first song he recorded was Respect Woman on the Wildfire
Records label, produced by Earl Messam. That was the record that
introduced me to world, Later he moved to producer Donovan German’s
Penthouse label, where he scored hits with Yush, Bad Boy, Gundelero and
Tek Him.
The funky Flex
remains his biggest hit; it went to number one on Billboard's Rap
Singles chart in 1992, and in 1993 he teamed with Richie Stephens on the
UK chart hit, Legacy. Besides Epic, Cobra was also signed to EMI Records
for which he did one album, The Milkman.

AUG 30, 1984 MICHAEL ALEXANDER JOHNSON A/K/A DADDY SCREW WAS DISCOVER BY
EARL A. MESSAM CEO OF WILD FIRE RECORDS INC. WHO PRODUCED HIS FIRST
RECORD ENTITLED “DIMBO BUCKET” AND "MADDA MAMPIE”:
That Put 'Daddy Screw on the map, also
'Daddy Screw and Mad
Cobra was one of the best young Deejay on my Recording Label.
Daddy Screw
Michael Alexander Johnson otherwise called 'Daddy Screw' was born on
March 29, 1968 and grew up in the Rollington Town area of Kingston. His
mother and grandmother who were very strict insisted than he attends two
church services every Sunday at the Church of God of Prophecy Religion.
A past student of
Vauxhall Comprehensive High School, during his years there he showed a
lot of in music and was well known to everyone who was always eager to
hear him deejay. His first release was 'Dimbo Bucket' in 1984 while he
was still in school.
He then became a
full time disc jockey for Black Stone Sound System. "I would flip the
record and play the instrumental version, deejay to it and crowd would
erupt," he said. As a result he was approached by Earl Messam who
produced and Distributed his first record on the Wildfire Records label
entitled “Dimbo Bucket” and "Madda Mampie", Study you Book, Great
Pretender, Genuine man and Sound Boy Killer which they all did fairly
well.
Eventually he met
two brothers Tony and Dave Kelley, who played a big role in moving
forward his career. Tony did an x-rated song with Daddy Screw called
"Gal Yuh Look Good," Dave Kelley heard it and liked it and told him that
xrated records never get radio exposure so he should change his lyrics.
He followed Dave's advice and began dedicating his toime to Penthouse
Studios where he linked Terror Fabulous. In 1990, he and Terror Fabulous
along with Dave Kelley as producer formed the Madhouse Label. Stardom
struck and hits after hits were released including "Body Good Like A
Gold" and "Model Pon Yuh One Time Man" which topped the Jamaican and
British reggae charts. International tours also became a part of his
routine with trips to England, Sweden, Japan and the US. When the
industry became overcrowded with similar styles he made a change and did
combinations with a singer, Donovan Steele and evolving from his change
were classic inventions such as "Kerry" and "Big Tings A Gwaan." He
returned to singing alone in 1995 when Steelie and Clevie produced
"Remember The Days" from his album "Multiple Choice." Other songs which
were released in the year after were "Jump and Say Bey" "Pretty Pretty"
and "Matey Judgement." Daddy Screw now works out mainly at the 2000
Studio and his future seems to have bigger things in store.

2006 N.T.G/NATE THE GREAT HIP HOP ALBUM “SUKAFREE” WILL BE LAUNCHING:
skillfully arranged, the
melodies on the style put to gather will pulsate thru your body
spontaneously. N.T.G album Sukafree is one of the very best for
NTG. This is just an example of what N.T.G is capable of creating. I
performed at the New Second Cousins at 5th and Germantown Ave. when I
was 19. I was like 21-22 years old when I opened for “Lil Kim” and
Horace at Bahama Bay on Delaware Ave. I've been through so many managers
and sold so many dreams but it's more than that - HIP-HOP is my way of
life. Later I ran into Kwe' and Bigg-Up in a barber shop, and we started
free styling. From there we sat and talked about what those plans were
and what I was working on. We bumped heads again and they took me to
Earl, and the rest is the future.

SIGNS TO WILD FIRE RECORDS INC.
CRAIG DWYER BORN, 17, 1973 AT KINGSTON:
First R&B Gospel Reggae Album “Jesus Foot Steep” by Craig
Dwyer, skillfully arranged, these melodies & harmonies pulsate thru your
body spontaneously. Wildfire Records Compilation release “Jesus Foot
Steep” album featuring 4 artists. This compilation is just an example of
what Wildfire Records is capable of creating. Some of the Artist that
had an influence on my concepts are artists such as Stevie Wonder, Earth
Wind and Fire, The O Jays, The Dels, Teddy, Commodores, Marvin Gaye,
baby face, etc; I can go on and on, however, the reason why I appreciate
their music is due to the fact that they are conscious about the reality
of their environment, and their lyrics is something one can relate to
according to their own world. With practice, I became an R&B Gospel
singer, and use to be a member of a ministry called Holiness. I had
several groups, "Embrace," etc, and sang in many different places.
Because of my singing and my tonality, I became a major player in Wild
Fire Records Inc. My goal is to distribute conscious lyrics such as
those of the 60's and the 70's. My mission is to distribute music that
is beneficiary to young ones as well as adults. This is an example of
some of the lyrics is write. 'I have been criticized, I have been
ostracized, by people who try to keep me down, but they cannot conquer
me, oh no, because I have got the father on my side," peace.

ORIGINS IN AFRICA- ORIGINS OF RASTAFARI FROM KING SOLOMON TO HAILE
SELASSIE I: The source of
Rastafarian lies in a specific geographical area, the Nile Valley, a
huge region that includes Egypt in the North and Ethiopia in the south.
The philosophy at the heart of Rastafarian is gathered from the soul of
this part of Africa. For example, it acknowledges Ra, revered by the
Egyptians as the god of the sun, as a life-giving force, and accepts
that mankind is not separate or different from God, or Jah, an
abbreviation for Jehovah.
KING SOLOMON.
In the time of King Solomon, Queen Makeba ruled over the empire of
Sheba, which consisted of Ethiopia, Egypt and parts of Persia. The
Queen's visit to the wealthy and wise Solomon in Jerusalem had been
planned for many years. In Jerusalem, Solomon converted her to the God
of Abraham; she had until then worshipped the sun in the person of Ra
the sun-god. When she returned to her land, Queen Makeba changed the
religion of her empire to Judaism. On her return, Makeba was pregnant by
Solomon; she had promised him that if she bore a son she would send the
boy to Jerusalem for instruction by his father. Accordingly, her son
Menelik journeyed, as a young man, to meet Solomon, having sworn to his
mother that as heir and successor to the kingdom he would return to
Ethiopia. When Menelik was leaving Jerusalem, King Solomon saw to it
that he was accompanied by the sons of his priests: he wanted to ensure
that the religion of Abraham would continue in Ethiopia. As a result,
this religion existed there in an undiluted form.
CHRISTIANITY/JUDAISM.
At the heart of Rastafari lie the Egyptian mysteries, the sort that may
be found in The Egyptian Book of the Dead. The elements of Judaism
within Rastafari are themselves an offspring of Egyptian mysticism. This
became institutionalized by Moses; when adopted by the High Priest's
daughter in Egypt, he was taught the principles of Osiris, Isis and
other Egyptian gods. For his final initiation he traveled to Ethiopia.
The source of Judaism was the teaching of Moses. As tradition has it,
Moses was author of the first five books of the Bible (the sixth and
seventh books of Moses are considered to be too complex for the common
man to comprehend; there is a famous obeah textbook entitled The Sixth
and Seventh Book of Moses).
During the time of Christianity, however, Paul the Apostle converted an
Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity. This eunuch was a high-placed,
respected rabbi of Orthodox Judaism. When he returned to Ethiopia, he in
turn converted the country to Christianity. So began the Ethiopian
Orthodox Church, a pure form of Christianity that kept its connection
with its Judaic and Egyptian pasts, all elements within Rastafari. This
church had considerable influence on the 225th king (descended directly
from King David, who, in turn, was descended from Moses). This member of
Ethiopian royalty was Ras Tafari, Emperor Haile Selassie I. Before his
visit to Jamaica on 21 April 1966, Haile Selassie had already
established the Ethiopian
Orthodox Church there, in answer to a request from the island's
Rastafarians.
23.
THE RISE OF RASTAFARI IN JAMAICA, THE MOVEMENT SPREADS IN 1930s JAMAICA:
In Jamaica, as elsewhere in the world, the 1930s were years of social
upheaval. Labor unrest on the island culminated in the vicious
suppression of striking sugar-cane workers in Westmoreland: four
strikers were shot dead, and dozens rounded up and jailed, including
Alexander Bustamente, the leader of the new Jamaican labour movement. It
was a perfect context for the rise of a band of islanders who divorced
themselves mentally from an oppressive social system. This cult,
Rastafarianism, thus became cast as a religion of the dispossessed among
those who failed to acknowledge the intellectual rigor of many
practitioners (the depth of Biblical and historical knowledge displayed
at a Rastafarian reasoning is intense).
In the hills of eastern Jamaica, Rastafarian encampments sprang up; a
life of asceticism and artistry became the Armour of the religion's
followers against Babylon. Leonard Howell, one of the island's chief
propagators of the religion, founded the Pinnacle encampment in an
abandoned estate between Kingston and Spanish Town. Howell eventually
decided that it was not Haile Selassie who was Jah but himself. In 1954
he was thrown into a mental home, and Pinnacle was closed down.
The dreads, as Rastafarians became known colloquially, spilled out into
the ghettoes of west Kingston. Around the time of independence in 1962,
there were a number of violent incidents involving fire-arms between
Rasta’s and the police, making headlines in the Daily Gleaner. The
movement was now traveling with the speed of a bush-fire into the
popular psyche of Jamaica.
24.
MORTIMER PLANNER-RASTA ELDER INFLUENCED BOB MARLEY:
In 1939, as an early convert to Rastafari, Planner had moved to Trench
Town. Born in Kingston in 1920, he was one of the founder members of
Kingston's first Rastafarian encampment in the Dungle. His devout
studies of all matters connected with the faith, combined with his
brilliant intellect, established Planner, or 'Plano', as he simply
became known, as one of the elders of Rastafari.
Marley and Planno met up in Trench Town, the Rastafarian elder
instructing Bob on the arcane truths of the religion. Later, Planno
would be Bob's manager, coordinating their careers, arranging studio
sessions, etc.
25. H.I.M. HAILE SELASSIE I VISIT JAMAICA:
On 21 April 1966, an event of
extraordinary significance was to occur for all followers of Rastafari.
His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia, was due to
arrive at Kingston airport. Away in Delaware at the time, Bob Marley had
written to his wife Rita: 'If possible, go and see for yourself.'
From her vantage point on Winward Road, which leads in from Palisadoes
airport, Rita Marley had what was perhaps the most profound of many
remarkable, God-given experiences she would enjoy in her life.
Seated in Governor-General Clifford Campbell's purring official
limousine, Haile Selassie was driven into Kingston. Rita eased her way
to the front of the crowd on this section of the Winward Road and stood
in the warm, light rain, waiting for the car to come nearer. Rita was
anxious. She had made a secret pact: if, somehow, she saw the sign she
was looking for, she would accept the divine status of Haile Selassie.
26. WHO IS HAILE SELASSIE I? H.I.M. HAILE SELASSIE I:
When, in 1930, Ras Tafari Makonnen, great-grandson of King Saheka
Selassie of Shoal, was made Emperor of Ethiopia and proclaimed Negusa
Negast (King of Kings), Jamaica's slum-dwellers and rural poor, for whom
Garvey had been something of a gallant oracle, regarded this event
as the fulfillment of a prophecy of deliverance. Indeed, Ethiopia had
symbolized all of Africa for the slave-descended Jamaicans since as far
back as 1784, when American Baptist minister George Liele founded the
Ethiopian Baptist Church on the island. These "Garveyites" were awed by
newspaper and newsreel accounts of the pomp of Selassie's coronation in
Addis Ababa and took note of the sybolism in the choice of his formal
title, Haile Selassie being an honorific meaning "Power of the Holy
Trinity." Selassie, they knew, claimed to be directly descended from
King Solomon, so they reasoned that he must be the long-awaited savior
of the planet's far-flung African peoples.
In Africa, Selassie was hailed as the greatest of modern monarchs and a
symbol of the continent's vast potential. In the United States,
residents of Harlem jammed movie houses to watch the newsreel footage of
his coronation. And in the Caribbean, as elsewhere in the West, the
advent of Selassie's reign was taken as shining proof for all
downtrodden people of color that, as the back-to-Africa Garveyites and
the firebrands of the syncretistic Rastafarian cult had foretold, the
day of Deliverance was at hand.
To the Garveyites, Haile Selassie I was a hero without peer. To the
Rastafarians he was the Living God of Abraham and Isaac, He Whose Name
Should Not Be Spoken.
27.
MARCOUS GARVEY-GARVEY’S PROPHECY FOR AN AFRICAN KING WAS THE SEED FOR
JAMAICAN RASTAFARI: Garvey,
who had been born in St. Ann in 1887 and founded the United Negro
Improvement Association, spoke to an audience at Madison Square Garden
in New York of "Ethiopia, land of our fathers," and proclaimed that
'Negroes' believed in "the God of Ethiopia, the everlasting God." Most
significantly, he is often cited as the first to announce "Look to
Africa for the crowning of a Black King; He shall be the Redeemer."
(Later there was some debate about this: was it Garvey who said these
words? An associate of his, the Reverend James Morris Webb, the author
of A Black Man will be the Coming Universal King, Provey by Biblical
History, had spoken to the same effect at a meeting in 1924.) The "Look
to Africa . . ." statement is customarily cited as the spark that
galvanized Garveyites into founding the sect that came to be known as
Rastafarianism (so called because "Ras Tafari" was Selassie's given
name.)

Interview with Journalist, Author and Rasta: Makeda
Makeda has published the guide book "Rastafari:
The New Creation", served as Jamaica's first Independent Senator in the
Parliament, and was one of the first journalists to cover Jamaica's
burgeoning Reggae scene in the 1970s. Island life asks Makeda about her

30. JAMAICA A
SHORT HISTORY: The Caribbean
island of Jamaica has had a far greater impact on the rest of the
world than one would expect from a country with a population of under
three million.
In the seventeenth
century, for example, Jamaica was the world centre of piracy. From its
capital of Port Royal, buccaneers led by Captain Henry Morgan plundered
the Spanish Main, bringing such riches to the island that it became as
wealthy as any of Europe's leading trading centres. In 1692, four years
after Morgan's death, Port Royal disappeared into the Caribbean in an
earthquake. Such a karmic sense of poetry is Jamaica. A
Rebellious Spirit A piratic, rebellious spirit has been central to
the attitude of Jamaicans ever since. This is clear in the lives of
Nanny, the woman who led a successful slave revolt against the English
redcoats in 1738; of
Marcus Garvey, who became the first prophet of black self
determination in the 1920s, founding the Black Star shipping line,
intended to transport descendants of slaves back to Africa; and of Bob
Marley, the Third World's first superstar, with his musical gospel of
love and global unity. Jamaica was known by its original
settlers, the Arawak Indians, as the Island of Springs. And it is in the
high country that Jamaica's unconscious resides: the primal
Blue Mountains and hills are the repository of most of Jamaica's
legends, a dream-like landscape that provides ample material for an
arcane mythology.
It was here, to the
safety of these impenetrable hills, that bands of former slaves fled,
after they were freed and armed by the Spanish to fight the English when
they seized the island in 1655. The Maroons, as they became known,
founded a community and underground state that would fight a guerrilla
war against the English settlers on and off for nearly eighty years.
